Acrylic - a plastic-based painting medium which, because it is water soluble, dries quickly and cleans up easily.

Encaustic - the art or technique of painting with hot wax colours that are fused after application into a continuous layer and fixed to a surface.

Etching - a process in which an etching needle is used to draw into a wax ground applied over a metal plate. The plate is submerged in a series of acid baths, each biting into the metal surface only where unprotected by the ground. The ground is removed, ink is forced into the etched depressions, the unetched surfaces wiped, and an impression is printed.

Giclée - a printing method utilising a revolutionary new process, whereby a continuous inkjet printer sprays a staggering four million droplets of ink (each one the size of a red blood cell) per second onto the paper or canvas. Requiring highly sophisticated printers and specially tested colourfast inks, this blend of fine art and state-of-the-art technology produces exceptionally faithful reproductions.

Hand-Embelishment - once the fine art print has been produced, it is placed alongside the original; under the direction of the artist certain elements of the image are then highlighted with hand-applied paints, inks, or gold and silver leaf. This is done to bring the piece closer to the essence of the original, and the effect is phenomenal.

Mixed media - a technique involving the use of two or more artistic media such as ink and pastel or painting and collage. The various media are combined to create one composition.

Oil paint - slow drying paint made when pigments are mixed with an oil, linseed oil being the most traditional. The oil dries with a hard film and the brightness of the colours are protected.

Silk Screen - a stencil method of printmaking in which an image is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance, and ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface.

Watercolour - a pigment in a water soluble medium, handled as a wash. Most watercolours are quite translucent
